so... after having trouble with my router? internet? last night, i can finally post my thoughts on our first day.
me? i loved it. thought it was fabulous. right up my alley. maybe it's my art-school background, but i so agree: i think it's so important to figure out ways to think differently and incorporate the new technologies... and get the kids EXCITED!!
i was a bit hesitant to venture down the twitter road... i have four kids who all seem to be addicted to social media (aren't they all?) and i viewed it as a teen thing. i was pleasantly surprised to find out that there is a place for us ancient individuals who are interested in utilizing it as a teaching tool. cool! it was funny when my oldest daughter (20) approached me last night: "...mom? ...um, why are you on twitter? are you trying to stalk me?"
loved the video. i felt myself nodding in agreement at many points that he brought up. question question question... it is a great way to learn. in fact, after viewing it, i myself had many questions:
what the heck is RSS?
social bookmarking?
keepvid?
why doesn't he use other words besides perplexity?
(curiosity, wonder, question would all be okay to "switch it up" a tad...)
enjoyed the poem. reiterated my belief in hands-on, interdisciplinary teaching. discover! create! learn! and thus know. general education's current test-centered teaching methodology leaves all but a few students out in the cold. in today's fast paced, disposable world, people need to almost re-train their brains to become excited about learning. its fun, yet maddening to amass and keep track of the myriad of sources that are now available to excite and stimulate student's creativity...as mad-eye moody would say: "constant vigilance!".
