Reflection 2
Section 1: Today was sort of a roller coaster of ideas and emotions. Not quite sure where I’m going to land with the final project which isn’t a typical part of my process. Spent some time talking things through with my roommate again and she reminded me of the difficulties I’ve expressed to her throughout the year.My new focus is to try and think of a way to tackle at least one of these: communication, using common planning time, scheduling with specialists, organizing thoughts/paperwork/student work…
Section 2: I’d never heard of this website before. I think it’s a great place to start if you were looking for some information or a new tool. The layout of this is much more inviting to me than various information randomly streaming along twitter.
Digital citizenship is something that I have honestly given next to no thought too. My students rarely get on the internet so I don’t feel huge pressure to teach them the ins outs and dangers of the digital world yet. At this point I am more concerned about them having an understanding that information/text comes in a variety of different ways and understanding the purpose of a particular kind of book/information.
Section 3:
My biggest question after listening to the podcast: How are students getting to college without previously learning how to think critically, problem solve and communicate? I understand that the level at which you are asking these students to perform these tasks has been taken up a notch, but why have these skills not been acquired throughout the past 12 years of school?!
I like the peer instruction model aka think/pair/share. I’m not surprised that becoming actively engaged increased the student success rates.
I agree with the point made about how becoming an “expert” or having more experience with something may make it more difficult for you to put yourself in the shoes of a learner who may be struggling with misconceptions. Some of the most powerful learning experiences I’ve had are ones in which my comfort level was reduced and my skills were limited within the confines of the situation. For this reason, I also like the model that was used where students were required to create their own multiple choice questions which included the correct answer as well as some close or tricky incorrect selections.
If our short term memory has limited space, why are we trying to cram so much into it? If we really need to know something, we need to know how to find it and use it. I like that this new college is providing students with the motivation to want to seek this information out as well as hold them accountable to do so.
I think seeing how you process with your roommate. I do the same with my husband and it is so nice that reinforcement or feedback like that. :)
