Reflection Day 2 Aimee Gates

I came back from lunch today with an idea of what I wanted to learn…..unfortunately my list was long.   I started working on a couple of things and I am starting to find my momentum towards my overall project goal.

After reading the digital citizenship I thought about what that would look like for young children.  For me as a mother there are games my children download and play on their iPod and there are times I am concerned with the safety of these games.  Recently there was a story going around that one of the games that recorded your voice and repeated it in funny tones was created by pedophiles to stalk children?  Was this true?  I am not sure but I removed it from my daughters’ devices.  Another teacher and friend found that Instagram was sharing her daughter’s pictures with other websites and some were adult dating sites…..  This safety issue concerns me especially as someone who doesn’t know the safety features of her own home Wi-Fi.

Don’t lecture me I found interesting because that was the main way my classes were taught to me starting as early as 6th grade.  This is also when my eyesight started to depreciate causing headaches after daily note taking.    I agree that too much information is covered in an hour and half lecture.  This is where again I feel privileged to work with young children.  In our room everyday ends with reflective play, social/peer discussion and self-directed/personal interest learning.  We call it “free choice time”.  This is when I see children building things and then asking to join their friend’s creations and then they seek me to take a picture to capture the moment.  This is when I see children playing “teacher” and reflecting and applying what they remember from the day’s lessons.  I think another way I could incorporate peer instruction is by having early finishers help/reteach the ideas to the children struggling.  I find worth in the idea that they just learned it and may have a fresher spin on how to share that skill. -Aimee
